Also known as 3G access points, Femtocells are a low-cost, low-power way of backhauling cellular traffic over a high-speed Internet connection, creating an end point that gives users access to broadband services, and competes with other technologies, such as WiFi, Bluetooth and Wimax. Femtocells are designed to work with existing mobile handsets and can support multiple users in a home environment. In the long run, femtocells also present an opportunity to develop new mobile services for the home. According to ABI Research, there will be 102 million users of femtocell products on 32 million access points worldwide by 2011.
