The small electronics market is exploding. Notebook computers, cell phones and Ipods require power sources to keep them working reliably with as little downtime for recharging as possible. Since the late 1990s, the Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery has best answered this market's needs, superseding both NiCd and the NiMH batteries. However, the Li-Ion battery has its drawbacks (toxic metals, life span degrades from the time it is made, high temperatures significantly shorten its life, etc.). In this report, we identify the primary battery technologies for small devices, as well as the companies developing emerging battery technologies that will drive these devices in the future. Some of the technologies mentioned in this report include SuperCapacitor Batteries (also known as Ultracapacitor Battery), Biobatteries, Sugar fuel cell batteries, Nanotechnology, Organic Batteries and Fuel cells.
