New Media in Asia

Asia has always followed its own path in regard to communications. Some countries like Korea and Japan have wide use of broadband; others like India and China are still rolling out Internet access to remote areas. In many parts of Asia, the first access to the Internet has come via the mobile phone. Now come a wave of new media: IPTV, online games and advertising to complicate the equation. This panel looks at new media developments in Asia and how they may affect the old media players and those who are just a step ahead.

Asia's New Investment Frontiers

India and China are important markets, but when it comes to investing, they're last year's news. Where are smart investors going to find new deals and valuations that are more realistic? Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia are just a few of the promising areas that adventurous VCs (and entrepreneurs) are seeking out. This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities of startups in less familiar places.

List, Buy or Sell?

A growing number of startups are choosing not to turn to public markets for exits. Mergers with similar startups, acquisitions by larger companies, or deals with private equity firms are presenting new options to entrepreneurs and investors. This panel will explore the options and address the benefits and drawbacks of each.

Web 3.0: Making the Web Personal

Web 1.0 was the first iteration of the Internet, offering Web sites based on the broadcast model - one site fits all. Web 2.0 brought he concept of interactivity and applications to the Web. We see Web 3.0 as the personal Web; sites, applications, widgets, and personalization that make each user's experience his or her own. Panelists will discuss the global trends toward the personal, semantic web and how it is being applied in Asia.

Cleantech, Clean Energy, Clean Profits?

Asia is not just about big smoky factories. Rapid industrialization has brought pollution and smog but there are promising trends. Entrepreneurs and governments have recognized the vast opportunities in clean energy technologies that are well-suited to Asia. Some of the biggest IPOs in recent years have involved Chinese solar energy companies. High-tech windmills are sprouting everywhere. Who are the investors? Where are the profits in cleantech?

Mobile: Where's the Profit in 3G?

While China still waits for a government decision on third generation mobile technologies and India is still introducing mobile to many remote areas, promising advanced technologies have been deployed in other parts of Asia. Mobile operators in Japan, Korea and Hong Kong have introduced exciting new technologies that enable new forms of transactions, video streaming, and live TV. What are the lessons for the rest of Asia from the successes and failures in counties with more advanced mobile technologies?

The Year of High Expectations: VC Trends in Asia 2007

This panel addresses a simple and fundamental question: where are the investors putting their money? Venture capitalists will share insights about the trends they see, the technologies and services they are betting on, and the outcomes they are seeing for their investments.

Software as a Service: The Asian Perspective

The emergence of software as a service is transforming the information industry as new players (Salesforce.com, Google) emerge and the incumbents (Microsoft, Symantec) scramble to adjust to the new paradigm. But Saas has additional implications in Asia beyond being a delivery mechanism. Many companies that once shunned the Asian market out of concern about piracy see delivery of services over the Web as a safe way to get their products to customers in a vast new market. At the same time, Asian companies that once worried about distribution costs now have potential access to millions of new customers. Who will benefit -- and who will be challenged-- in Asia from this fundamental shift in the delivery of information and services.

Computing's Next Phase

Every 20 years or so, the IT industry undergoes a fundamental shift. From mainframes to minicomputers to PCs, each trend has left losers behind and created new winners. The latest trend is clear: mobile devices and web-based applications. What are the implications for countries who have built prosperity on low-cost manufacturing and generic software development? Can a China or India make a leap to a higher place on the food chain? Who will benefit and who will suffer?

Red Herring 100 Alumni Reunion

What happens to a company after it makes the Red Herring 100 list? At this panel, some past winners will share their experience on the impact of the award, how they coped with heightened public scrutiny, and the paths they have taken since they were recognized with the Red Herring 100 award.
